Introduction

Reviving an inactive Instagram account isn’t just about posting more frequently—it’s about posting smarter. As a social media manager, my approach focuses on strategy, creativity, and understanding the audience. This case study shows how I turned around a stagnant account in the travel and lifestyle niche by leaning into emotional storytelling, experimentation, and well-timed posting.

Background and Challenges

The Instagram account in question belonged to the travel and lifestyle niche but had been inactive for a while. Here were the main challenges:

  • Low Reach and Engagement: Reels were capped at 1,000-2,000 views, no matter how well-edited they were.

  • Limited Content: With only one location available for posting, creating engaging content was tricky.

  • Inconsistent History: The account had struggled with irregular posting, leading to an audience that had stopped engaging.

Objective

The primary goal was to revive the account, increase reach and engagement, and get past the 1,500-view barrier. This was to be achieved through an experimental, week-long content sprint to test different strategies and identify what resonated most with the audience.

The Plan

1. Understanding the Audience

The target audience consisted of 16- to 26-year-old Indian students and young professionals who are passionate about travel and nature. We knew they were most active between 8 and 9 PM, so our posting time was planned for 7-8 PM—early enough to ensure our posts landed on their feed when they logged in.

2. Competitor Research

I started by doing a competitive analysis. This involved studying what was working in similar accounts, especially in the travel and lifestyle space. One thing stood out: emotional triggers worked consistently. Content that tapped into nostalgia, curiosity, or cultural pride tended to go viral.

3. Crafting a Strategy

The strategy was simple:

  • Focus on creating emotionally engaging content (nostalgia, suspense, and pride).

  • Leverage timely posting to ensure maximum visibility.

  • Use relevant hashtags (not spamming) and high-quality edits to boost discoverability.

  • Be active before and after posting to drive engagement by interacting with the audience and similar accounts.

The Experiment: 1 Week, 3 Reels

During this one week, we posted 3 Reels that followed distinct strategies:

1. Moment Marketing: Tapping into National Pride (33k+ Views)

  • What We Did: Posted a Reel within 2 hours of ISRO’s moon landing announcement. This moment was huge for the country, and emotions were running high.

  • Execution: We used aesthetic moon visuals paired with ISRO’s viral slogan and audio. The patriotic and timely content struck a chord.

  • Result: This Reel became a standout hit, crossing 33,000 views and driving tons of shares. It also helped us reach 6,000 accounts that week, a 350% increase compared to the week before.

2. Nostalgia: Revisiting Childhood Memories (14k+ Views)

  • What We Did: Used a popular song from the early 2000s (“Like a pearl upon the ocean”) that was nostalgic for our audience. The Reel tied the song’s lyrics to visuals of shimmering water at the location.

  • Execution: We crafted an emotional caption: “Now we understand why the song was written this way.” It connected with the audience on a personal level.

  • Result: The Reel got 14,000 views and boosted account engagement by 629%.

3. Curiosity & Pop Culture: Hidden Location (4k+ Views)

  • What We Did: Created suspense by asking viewers to guess the location of the Reel, hinting it was featured in two popular Bollywood movies. Used a trending audio track and paired it with visually stunning clips from the location.

  • Execution: The hook phrase “Guess this hidden location” generated curiosity and engagement.

  • Result: This Reel reached 4,000 views, proving curiosity is a powerful motivator. While the Reel performed well, it highlighted that emotional storytelling resonated more with the audience than simply following trends.

By the end of the week, the account’s performance had skyrocketed:
